Pamela Whitney Gray
Pamela Whitney Gray spent most of her career in commercial art and the printing industry. In later years she enjoyed her position as an assistant librarian in a small town library in Colorado. After twenty years in the Rocky Mountains Pam returned to Mount Vernon, Ohio to spend time with her parents in their golden years. Her father, Chuck Whitney, 1918-2009, was the original Barn Consultant. Pam says, "I had the pleasure of being my father’s chauffeur, ‘go-fer’ and main ‘right-hand-man’". For five years Pam and her father spent many days traveling Ohio and the surrounding states doing barn consultations and helping barn owners to understand and preserve their barns.
She enjoyed learning about the old ways from him. These were wonderful learning experiences and she soon realized she had the same passion as Chuck for barns and their history. She is continuing her dad’s work, helping to save old barns and to spread the story that they tell of our agricultural heritage.
Pam's book Americanization of the Family Barn is now out of print. Her goal is to educate the general public about the historical importance of America’s barnyard castles. Pam continues to travel the state telling about the history and value of family barns with her PowerPoint program. She also continues to do barn consultations and work one-on-one with families to help them to understand and preserve their barns.
Pam's second book is a compilation of her dad's writings and research. Ohio Barns Inside and Out with the Barn Consultant is now available for purchase through this website.
Sheis president of Friends of Ohio Barns, and is also proud to be part of the Knox County Barn Tour presented every other year in Knox County Ohio.
